The river of time

How India Evolved

Four eras of a civilization that never stopped becoming — swipe sideways through time.

3300 BCE – 200 CE

Ancient India

The age of wisdom, cities and song

From the planned streets of Harappa to the universities of Takshashila, ancient India built the foundations of thought, trade and art that would echo for millennia. The Vedas were composed, the Buddha walked, and merchants sailed toward Mesopotamia and beyond.

Medieval India

Empires, temples and the crossing of worlds

The Guptas painted with mathematics and grace. Cholas built stone chariots for their gods and navies across seas. Vijayanagara rose as a city of bazaars and grand temples. Persian, Turkic and Indian cultures wove together in new courts and new musics.

Colonial Era

Trade, conquest and the seeds of nation

Portuguese pepper traders arrived. The East India Company planted itself in Surat. The Mughal empire fractured into courts and kingdoms. New ideas collided with old kingdoms — printing presses, railways, schools, and the anger that would forge a nation seeking to be reborn.

Modern India

Independence, cinema and the future's voice

India threw off empire and wrote its own constitution. The first film flickered onto a screen in Bombay. A subcontinent became a nation of voters, makers, and voices — cities, stories, sciences, and a cultural renaissance that reaches across the world.
