History
French rule alongside surrounding Indian regions shaped the separated districts of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. The union territory comprises four separated former French enclaves, with Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu regional settings. Administration transferred in practice in 1954, while legal transfer was completed later. Arikamedu’s archaeology records much older exchange networks that predate European colonial rule.
Culture & Traditions
Four former French enclaves with Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cultures and a distinctive colonial urban legacy. Puducherry and Karaikal are largely connected with Tamil cultural life; Mahe and Yanam have different regional languages and foodways. French-era architecture is one layer, not the entire identity of the territory. Sri Aurobindo’s ashram and nearby Auroville are distinct institutions. Auroville extends beyond the union territory into Tamil Nadu. Terracotta, textile work, kolam and local religious festivals connect heritage to everyday life beyond the coastal promenade.
