History

Clan-based societies, British administration and the Mizo peace process shaped the path to statehood in 1987. Colonial administration and Christian missions altered education, scripts and institutions in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Conflict and political negotiations later culminated in the 1986 peace accord. Statehood followed in 1987, while smaller communities retain histories not captured by a single Mizo narrative.
