History
Ancient kingdoms, Buddhist and Shaiva learning, Sultanate, Mughal, Afghan, Sikh and Dogra rule precede the region’s complex modern political history. The Kashmir Valley and Jammu have distinct historical trajectories, including different literary, religious and courtly traditions. Rajatarangini is an important Sanskrit chronicle, while later Persian texts and oral traditions preserve other perspectives. The territory’s modern history includes conflict, displacement and administrative change, which require careful, non-romanticised treatment.
Culture & Traditions
A Himalayan region of Kashmiri, Dogra, Gujjar, Pahari and other cultures, renowned for craft and sacred landscapes. Lal Ded’s verse and later Sufi-Rishi traditions are important to Kashmiri cultural memory. Dogra performance and Gujjar-Bakarwal pastoral knowledge add other regional histories. Religious festivals differ across communities and households. Pashmina weaving, walnut carving and papier-mâché depend on specialised labour. Wazwan describes a formal culinary tradition with variable menus, not a compulsory fixed number of dishes. Heritage should include displaced communities and working artisans, not only scenic images.
