History
Hill kingdoms, trans-Himalayan exchange and British-era Shimla shaped the state consolidated after independence. Small hill kingdoms developed distinctive temples, courts and artistic workshops across the western Himalaya. Colonial Shimla became a summer administrative centre, while trans-Himalayan regions maintained other networks of trade and religion. Himachal’s present statehood dates to 1971.
Culture & Traditions
A western Himalayan state of temple valleys, Buddhist regions, pastoral routes and hill architecture. Dham is a ceremonial meal with regional menus and specialist cooks; it is not the same feast in every valley. Deity processions and local fairs coexist with Buddhist observances in areas such as Lahaul and Spiti. Chamba rumal embroidery, Kinnauri textiles and kath-kuni building techniques preserve knowledge of materials and place. Mountain culture is not static: migration, horticulture, tourism and education continue to reshape livelihoods.
