History

Harappan ports, regional sultanates, mercantile networks and the freedom movement all left major legacies. Dholavira and Lothal connect Gujarat with Harappan settlement and exchange, though the precise interpretation of some archaeological structures remains debated. Later ports and merchant communities linked the region with the Indian Ocean. Sultanate, Mughal, princely and colonial periods contributed different architectural and commercial layers.

Culture & Traditions

A western state of maritime trade, stepwells, textile traditions and devotional cultures. Navratri’s garba circles are living devotional and social gatherings, with differences between village, urban and staged forms. Uttarayan turns kite-flying into a seasonal public event. Kutch’s pastoral, artisan and maritime communities sustain distinctive traditions. Patola double-ikat weaving, rogan painting and bandhani rely on specialised knowledge transmitted through workshops and families. Craft labels should not erase the people who produce them or the labour involved.
