History
Successive cities around the Yamuna produced forts, tombs, bazaars and civic landscapes that continue within a vast modern metropolis. Delhi’s historic cities developed in different locations and periods; the familiar count of seven is a useful convention, not a complete archaeological inventory. Shahjahanabad became a Mughal capital in the seventeenth century. New Delhi’s colonial planning and post-Partition migration changed the metropolis again.
Culture & Traditions
India’s capital territory, layered with Sultanate, Mughal, colonial and post-independence urban histories. Qawwali at Nizamuddin, Urdu poetry, neighbourhood food and Phool Walon ki Sair connect different traditions of devotion and public life. Punjabi refugee histories, new migrations and contemporary arts have continually remade the city. Heritage extends beyond three UNESCO monuments to stepwells, markets, shrines and ordinary residential streets. Conservation must account for living communities rather than treating inhabited places as empty historical scenery.
