History
Designed after independence by a team led by Le Corbusier, Chandigarh became a landmark of modernist planning in South Asia. The city was planned after Partition to provide a new capital for Indian Punjab. Its development involved Indian and international planners, architects and administrators, not only Le Corbusier. Chandigarh became a union territory and shared capital following the reorganisation of Punjab in 1966.
Culture & Traditions
A planned modern city serving as the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana. Neighbourhood markets, public gardens and regional institutions connect the planned city with Punjabi, Haryanvi and migrant life. Its modernist design exists alongside everyday adaptations by residents. Nek Chand’s Rock Garden transformed discarded materials into an extensive sculptural environment. Museums, theatre and art education show that the city’s culture is broader than an architectural master plan.

Nek Chand used discarded materials to build figures, walls and landscapes. What began as a personal project later became a major public art environment.
