Jainism

An ancient Indian tradition centred on non-violence, disciplined self-restraint, many-sided truth and liberation from rebirth.

History & Origins

Jain tradition honours a succession of 24 Tirthankaras; Mahavira, the twenty-fourth, lived in the first millennium BCE. Digambara and Shvetambara traditions developed distinct canons and practices. Jain traditions belong to the ancient Indian world of renunciation and philosophical inquiry. Traditional accounts trace an enduring teaching through the Tirthankaras; historians distinguish this sacred chronology from evidence about figures such as Mahavira. Renunciants and lay supporters developed interdependent forms of religious life. Jain centres flourished in western India, Karnataka and other regions through patronage, trade and learning. Digambara and Shvetambara traditions share fundamental teachings but differ in monastic discipline and canon. Each also includes internal subdivisions, so neither label describes a completely uniform community.

Cultural Influence in India

Jain communities have made major contributions to philosophy, manuscript preservation, temple architecture, trade ethics, philanthropy and vegetarian food cultures. Manuscript libraries, illustrated texts, temple building and support for education are important Jain contributions. Pilgrimage landscapes include hilltop temple complexes and large sculptural monuments; their architecture reflects different eras and local workshops. Household practice may include vegetarian food, fasting, charitable giving and reflection on harm. Monastic vows are more demanding than lay obligations. Practices concerning root vegetables, eating after sunset and fasting vary; severe fasting should not be presented as a requirement for every Jain or as general health advice.
